Bernharð Þórsson lauk námi frá myndlistardeild Listaháskóla Íslands 2019 með útskriftarverkinu Raddbönd. Í verkinu léði hann Kjarvalsstöðum einskonar rödd með því að tengja sérsmíðaðar orgelpípur við loftræstikerfi byggingarinnar. Í verkum sínum vinnur Bernharð með hljóð, hljóðbylgjur og hið líkamlega, en frá útskrift hefur hann rannsakað bylgjur, liti, og möguleikann á að móta striga í form sem minna á hljóð og hljóðbylgjur.
Bernharð Þórsson graduated from the Iceland University of the Arts’ fine art department in 2019. In his graduation piece, Raddbönd, Bernharð gave Korpúlfsstaðir a voice by placing custom-made organ pipes onto the building’s ventilation system. Bernharð works with sound, sound waves and the physical, and has since graduation researched waves, colours and the possibilities of shaping canvas into forms that imitate the movement of sound waves.
Crashing Waves reynir á ímyndunarafl áhorfandans þar sem verkið sýnir ekki ölduna eða hljóðbylgjuna brotna, heldur augnarblikið áður en það gerist. Með því að móta strigann og notast við bláum og sægrænum litum, sem minna á hreyfingar vatns eða hljóðbylgju, er líkt eftir augnablikinu þegar hljóðbylgjan brotnar á sama hátt og þegar öldur lenda á ströndinni og brotna með stórum hvelli.
Crashing Waves tests the viewer’s imagination, as the work doesn’t show the wave’s inevitable crash, but the moment just before it happens. By shaping the canvas and using blue and sea green colours, which remind us of the movement of sound waves and water, the artist imitates the moment just before the sound wave crashes like an ocean wave crashing on the shore with a big bang.
