Danish born artist and designer, Litten Nystrøm (b. 1977) was educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of Design in Copenhagen 2003-8. In 2011 she moved permanently to Iceland following an artist’s residency in Seyðisfjörður. Her work often crosses media and genres, to define a space where object, surface and actions overlap. The result can be characterized as subtle manifestations that address the ongoing intervention between time, circumstance, matter and consciousness, positioning object and image as restless forms with fleeting properties. Concepts and dialogues often developed on site, materialize in works and assemblies that are both happenings and tangible compositions in one.
Litten has exhibited internationally and her work is included in the comprehensive anthology: “Danish Artist Books” presenting the most significant Danish contributions to the history of artists’ bookmaking. Besides her own practice she was the manager for the Residencies & Projects program at Skaftfell Center for Visual Art; she was a founder of the Iceland based artist group RoShamBo; a co-founder of the design label RÓ; and most recently co-founded FOSS - an artist run publishing house for limited editions. Since 2019 she has been teaching at LHI in Reykjavík.
Litten Nystrøm (f. 1977, Danmörk)) er listamaður og hönnuður. Hún nam við Konunglega Listaháskólann í Kaupmannahöfn 2003-2008. Hún hefur búið á Íslandi síðan 2011, í kjölfar listamannadvalar á Seyðisfirði. Hún vinnur þvert á miðla og stefnur til að skilgreina rými þar sem efni, flötur og virkni mætast. Útkoman einkennist af blæbrigðum sem koma fram við inngrip milli tíma, aðstæðna, efnis og vitundar sem staðsetur hlut og mynd sem óvær form með hverfula eiginleika.
Litten hefur sýnt alþjóðlega og verk hennar eru meðtalin í safnritinu Danish Artist Books. Samhliða eigin listsköpun starfaði hún sem umsjónarmaður listamannadvalar Skaftfells Myndlistarmiðstöðvar Austurlands; stofnaði listhópinn RoShamBo; er einn stofnenda hönnunarmerkisins RÓ og einn stofnenda hins nýlega FOSS, útgáfu fyrir listrit í takmörkuðu upplagi. Litten hefur kennt við Listaháskóla Íslands síðan 2019.
Mýrin fjallar um tíma sem efnisgerist í hægri breytingu efnis, á landamærum hins líffræðilega og jarðfræðilega í gegnum efnafræðileg sambönd og ferla. Fundið efni; mýrarrauði, aska, steinar og leir skapa sviðsmynd þar sem efni, sem oft er álitið stöðugt, er myndgert með hverfula eiginleika; í eðli þeirra og sem ferlar er hannað og skapað með manneskjuna í forgangi. Veruleikinn umhverfis og innra með okkur, á meðan samtal og viðbrögð við aðstæðum á sér stað, þar sem fegurð brýst fram í samhljómi lita, ljóss, gass, vökva og efnis á tíma sem nefndur er “mannfræði” af vísindunum.
Mýrin reflects upon time materialized by a gradual transformation of matter, in a borderline area between biological, geological and chemical substances and processes. Found material; Iron rich mýrarrauði, ashes, stone and clay sets a stage where material, often perceived as stable and solid, is depicted as entities with fleeting properties; in their nature and as processes we design and execute to human advantage. The reality around and within us as ongoing dialogues and reactions to circumstance, where beauty arises in a constellation of colour, light, gas, liquid and solids in a time named “the anthropocene” by scientists.
